2. I for one would love to see a Debian- or Ubuntu-like distribution with the Solaris kernel and management tools. You (Sun) would likely win a lot of converts that way, since the typical /. argument against Solaris revolves around superficial things like CDE (yes, even though Gnome has been available for years, and is the default now), the filesystem layout (e.g. /opt/this, /usr/sfw/that), and the lack (by default) of lots of the GNU niceties.
   You can’t underestimate the influence this eventually has on Sun’s bottom line – the people choosing Ubuntu or Fedora on their basement PCs today because it’s prettier and easier are the people who may be architects and sysadmins with purchase authority in ten years.

3. Solaris lost it’s (Unix) Way long ago, maybe it’s time to move forward?

   Sun has committed far too many original sins.

   But maybe it’s not too late for forgiveness, if your are willing to learn to do things right.

4. Don’t let openness starve the Sun. You guys have put tons of work into D-Trace and all the other ground-breaking features that go into Solaris 10. Right now Sun needs as many of these features as it can round up to motivate companies to switch away from Linux. Why are they using Linux in the first place? Cost. Why would the switch to Solaris? D-Trace. If you give the Linux community D-Trace, you are giving away the store.

5. What “ground-breaking features” are you talking about? All I can see is the same hacks on top of old hacks without solving any of the fundamental Unix problems, and without removing any of the hacks/crap that have been added over the last 30 years.

6. Why? What exactly are the deficiencies in SVR4 packaging and patching that merit switching to debian packages? Addressing these issues would be better than starting from scratch with a new package system which would force people to re-write the zones installation code among other things. I’ve written about this a bit before and the pros and cons of various package architectures and management systems has been discussed in the opensolaris-discus forum. The consensus there seems to be that SVR4 packages are the practical way to go architecture wise. Package/Patch management and package creation discussions generated more debate, and that is to be expected, each future opensolaris distro will probably end up with differing top level package management systems.

   Sustaining a system is something that often gets forgotten about. Even internally in Sun products sometimes appear before its been properly thought out how to sustain them. How to create the patches, why re-delivering the packages is a bad idea, how not to nuke the customers setup in the process etc. If there are significant sins from the past in the package architecture or the tools (and I know some tools could do with some confession and penance!) then lets try and address these as opensolaris goes forward.
